Sick or Not Sick? : Evolving Biomarkers for Severe Bacterial Infection
نویسنده
چکیده
Emergency physicians see, diagnose, and treat patients with severe bacterial infections on every shift. Advances in the understanding of mammalian biochemistry, immunology, and physiology offer new pathways by which we can understand and diagnose this complex disease process. The improved sophistication of laboratory methods offers the rapid detection of biomarkers previously only available through reference laboratories.

Bacterial isolates in the sick young infant in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
This prospective study was carried out to determine the bacterial pathogens and their antibiotic sensitivity profile in the sick young infant. All consecutive young infants with features suggestive of infection seen over 5 months at a Comprehensive Health Centre in Ile-Ife, were screened for septicaemia and local bacterial infections. Of the 121 sick young infants screened for infection, 94 (77...

Serum specimens from 12 sick and 20 normal horses were examined for levels of different classes of immunoglobulin (Ig) by a single radial immunodiffusion. The level of IgA in the sera of sick horses was about 50% lower than in the sera of normal horses. By contrast, the level of serum IgG was higher in sick than in normal horses. Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) responsiveness of blood lymphocytes show...
متن کاملStopping the Looming Co-epidemic of Diabetes and Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is an airborne communicable disease caused by a bacterial infection. TB spreads when someone sick with the disease coughs or sneezes, expelling TB bacteria into the air, and someone else inhales them. Once infected, most people continue living normally without ever becoming sick. That’s because a healthy immune system won’t eliminate the TB germs from the body, but it will seal the...

BACKGROUND Changes in peripheral thyroid hormone concentration and metabolism can occur in euthyroid patients suffering from severe non-thyroidal illnesses. Recently, sick euthyroid syndrome has been reported in patients suffering from advanced heart failure. AIM This study was to evaluate prospectively the presence and pathophysiological implications of sick euthyroid syndrome in moderate-to...
